She grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. As an undergraduate at Hampshire College, Mr. Squires said she was outraged by the white reaction to efforts to desegregate Boston schools in the mid-1970s and made a student film about it, which was one of his projects as part of her crew.

She died on August 26 at her home in Walpole, New Hampshire. Her death was confirmed by her daughters Sarah and Lilly Burns, who said her rapidly progressive Parkinson’s disease was the cause of her death.

She first learned of her illness in 2005. After that, she battled the disease.
