Brian Binnie was a U.S. Navy officer and one of the test pilots for SpaceShipOne. He was known for flying the first powered test flight of the SpaceShipOne, flying the 11P.

Brian Binnie was born on April 26, 1953, in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. He was only 69 years old when he died. He was born in Scotland to William P. Binnie, a professor of physics at Purdue University.

When Binnie was five, his family returned to Scotland and lived in Aberdeen, where his father taught at the University of Aberdeen and later at Stirling. When Binnie was a teenager, the family moved to Boston.

Brown University awarded Binney a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. He graduated from Brown University with a master’s degree in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics before entering Princeton University for a master’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering.

In 1988, he received a diploma from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. In addition, Binnie flew the Atmospheric Test Vehicle of the Rotary Rocket.

He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Aberdeen in 2006. On December 17, 2003, the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first powered flight, Binnie completed SpaceShipOne’s first powered test flight, Mwassion 11P, reaching a top speed of Mach 1.2 and an altitude of 12.9 miles (20.7 kilometers). On October 4, 2004, he led SpaceShipOne’s second Ansari X Prize flight, flight 17P, which received the X Prize.

Additionally, Binnie worked for Scaled Composites for several years as a test pilot and program business manager before joining XCOR Aerospace as a senior engineer and test pilot in 2014.
