Ela Bhatt Obituary, Death Cause: On November 2, at the age of 89, Ela Bhatt, a lawyer and Gandhian activist who founded the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA) in 1972, passed away at the Ahmedabad Hospital.

Bhatt received numerous honors for her efforts to improve the lives of poor women in Gujarat, including the Padma Shri (1985), the Padma Bhushan (1977), and the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership (1986).

She worked as SEWA’s general secretary from 1972 to 1996. Prior to her resignation on October 19th of this year, she served as the chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi-founded Gujarat Vidyapith. Additionally, she had been Sabarmati Ashram’s chairperson since 2016.

A Padma Bhushan recipient and a pioneer of women’s rights, she devoted her life to empowering them through grassroots entrepreneurship. Her exceptional legacy shall always inspire.”
