Ernie Zampese was an American professional football coach. Playing for Santa Barbara High School, he was selected as the CIF Player of the Year in 1953 and went on to play at the halfback position for the USC Trojans in 1955 and 1956.

He was Born on March 12, 1936, in Santa Barbara, California, United States. He served as an assistant coach at Cal Poly (1966) and San Diego State University (1967-76) before making his NFL debut as a scout for the New York Jets in the 1977-78 season.

Zampese was the Chargers’ wide receiver coach from 1979 to 1982 after joining coach Don Coryell’s staff. The assistant head coach from 1983 to 1984, responsible for the passing game, and offensive coordinator from 1985 to 1986.
