Gerald Potterton was an Anglo-Canadian director, writer, producer and animator who lived from March 8, 1931. He is best known for animating “Yellow Submarine” and directing the cult film “Heavy Metal.”
As director of the National Film Council of Canada’s animated shorts “My Financial Career” and “Christmas Cookies,” and producer of “The Selfish Giant,” Potterton was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Animated Short.

Gerald Potterton Death Cause
Gerald Potterton, 91, is no longer with us. On August 23, 2022, he passed away. It is presumed that the cause of his death was a natural disease. In a statement released Wednesday by the National Film Board of Canada, Potterton died at the Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital in Cowansville, Quebec.

Gerald Potterton Early Life
Potterton, a London native, studied at the Hammersmith Art School. In 1955, he relocated to Canada from England.
Potterton produced live-action and animated motion movies while residing in Cowansville, Quebec, Canada. He painted landscapes and aviation-related subjects, drawing inspiration from Quebec’s pastoral Eastern Townships.

Gerald Potterton Career
Potterton joined the NFB in 1954, and after working as an assistant animator in London, he directed both animated and live-action films. In 1965 he produced The Railrodder with Buster Keaton and Pinter’s People with Harold Pinter (1969).

After contributing to George Dunning’s animated film The Yellow Submarine in 1968, he resumed his freelance career in the UK, US and Canada. He directed live-action films and animated sequences for Sesame Street and The Electric Company in the early 1970s. Producer Ivan Reitman hired him in 1981 to direct the animated film Heavy Metal.
Potterton manages more than a thousand artists, animators and technicians from 17 countries in Los Angeles, New York, London, Montreal and Ottawa. During the 1980s and 1990s, he continued to produce animated and live-action films for television and video.
