Herb Kohler was born on February 20, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was 83 when he died. His grandfather, Frederick DeYoung, was also an American jurist and politician who served on the Illinois Supreme Court and Cook County Superior Court.

He is a 1957 graduate of Choate School and chaired its Board of Directors from 2005-10. In 1965, he graduated from Yale University majoring in industrial management, and joined the company. In June 1972, he was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer at the age of 33.

Kohler was inducted into the National Kitchen and Bathroom Hall of Fame in 1989 and the National Housing Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2006, the Youth Achievement Award honored him with induction into the U.S. Business Hall of Fame.
