Wilhelm was raised by wealthy Jewish parents in Vienna, Austria, in the 1930s. Her father, Rudolf Willheim, was the manager of the transatlantic steamship company Holland America line. As a child, she frequented art museums and often took up painting as a hobby.

In 1939 or 1938, at the age of 14, Wilhelm boarded the Kindertransport, leaving her parents in Nazi-occupied Austria. She arrived in Leeds, England, and lived there for two years, working as a servant, nanny, and candy peeler while waiting for her parents to escape. When Wilhelm was 16, she received a letter from her parents that they had immigrated to the United States.

As of 2010, Renée lived in an apartment on Madison Avenue in New York City for 40 years. She celebrated her 100th birthday in May 2021, and died in New York City on August 24, 2022, at the age of 101.
