Estelle Louise Fletcher was an American actress, best known for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award.

She was born Estelle Louise Fletcher on July 22, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama, the second of four deaf parents. Her father, Robert, was an Anglican priest who lost his hearing when we were 4 years old when he was struck by lightning. Her mother Estelle was born deaf. Her father spent most of his time away from home while building a church for the hearing impaired.

Fletcher attended the University of North Carolina, graduating in 1957, with plans to work in theater. She left for Los Angeles and had to beg for audition roles when she ran out of money.

Fletcher was so shy that her teachers initially thought she was also deaf and advised her parents to send her to a specialized school in Talladega.

Instead, they sent her to live in Texas with a wealthy aunt who said she had the time and resources to encourage the young girl to speak up.

She booked bit parts in several TV shows in the late 1950s and 1960s, including “Lawman,” “Maverick,” “The Untouchables,” “Wagon Train” and “Perry Mason,” but had a tough time landing roles because, at 5 feet 11, she often towered over her male counterparts.

Louise Fletcher died of natural causes at the age of 88, according to her family. Fletcher battled breast cancer twice before she died at the age of 80.

Fletcher died in her sleep on Friday, September 23, 2022, according to a statement from her agent, David Shaul. She lives in her home in Montdurausse, France, which she converted from a 300-year-old farmhouse. So far, no cause of death has been given.
