Born in Arkansas on October 13, 1940, Farrell Sanders played clarinet and drums in church before taking up the alto saxophone in high school. His decision to switch to his legendary tenor saxophone was out of necessity. His mother worked as a cook in a school cafeteria, and his father worked for the City of Little Rock.

In Oakland, California, Pharoah Sanders began his tenor saxophone career. After playing in a rhythm and blues band, he moved to New York City in 1961. Sanders then joined John Coltrane’s Final Quartet, where he typically played extended, discordant solos.

Sanders recorded an album with electronic music producer Floating Points and the London Symphony Orchestra in 2020. Released in March 2021, the “Promises” album marks Sanders’ first new album in 20 years.
