Mesnier was born into a family of nine children in the French village of Bonnay. He first became interested in becoming a chef when he visited his brother’s pastry shop in a nearby city and was drawn to the smell of fresh fruit in the kitchen. When he was fourteen, his mother found him an apprentice in a pastry shop in Besançon. He works six days a week, from 6 am to 8 pm, and in exchange he receives 300 francs a month, plus room and board, and cooking lessons.

French-born pastry chef Roland Mesnier, who has worked in the White House for 25 years making desserts for dignitaries and presidents who claims to never serve the same dish twice, at an assisted living facility in Burke, Virginia died on 26 August. His son Georges Mesnier claimed that cancer-related complications were the cause of Roland Mesnier’s death.

The White House Historical Society acknowledged his death on Saturday, saying he died of a minor illness on Friday.
