LANETT POLICE RELEASE: On October 28, 2022, at around 8 PM, the Lanett Police Department was called in regard to a verbal altercation in the 1600 block of Tanyard Road.
Stefanus Benecke was sitting on the porch of the house when the officer came on the scene. Benecke fired his gun into the patrol car as the cop was about to get out of their patrol car. Other law enforcement officers arrived at the site after the officer managed to move the car out of the way of the gunfire.
Benecke was detained and accused of attempting to kill the police officer. He was driven to the Chambers County Detention Center, where he’s being kept right now. The policeman wasn’t hurt in any way.
At this moment, the officer’s name won’t be made public.
The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Valley Police Department, and Lanett Fire and EMS are all acknowledged by the Lanett Police Department for their cooperation in this matter.
