Stephen Chazen was an American businessman. He was the former president and chief executive officer of Occidental Petroleum.

He was born in 1946, in the United States. His actual date of birth is unknown. He received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Rutgers University, a master’s degree in Finance from the University of Houston, and a Ph.D. in Geology from Michigan State University. He previously served as Managing Director of Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions at Merrill Lynch.

At Merrill Lynch, he served as Managing Director of Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions. He began his career in 1994 with Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY), the fourth largest U.S. oil producer, a publicly traded oil company headquartered in Los Angeles, California. From 1994 to 1999, he served as Executive Vice President of Corporate Development for Occidental Petroleum Corporation.

He held this position at the company from 1999 to 2004. He was Chief Financial Officer from 2004 to 2007 and Senior Executive Vice President from 2004 to 2007. Stephen was President from December 2007 to 2016 and from May 5, 2011, to April 29, 2016.

He succeeded Ray R. Irani, who later became chairman. He dismissed any disagreements. He is a board member of the American Petroleum Institute. In addition, he serves on the boards of Washington Mutual, Premcor, and Lyondell Chemical Company. He is a board member of the Catalina Island Conservation and Aquarium of the Pacific Ocean. He is a Republican. Chazen was asked to reapply to serve on the Occidental board in 2019.

Magnolia announced his passing on Friday, two days after announcing that Chazen was stepping down as chairman and CEO for “serious health reasons.” He died on 22 September 2022 at the age of 76.
